The process to consider moving to Assisted Living at Hermitage Richmond includes:
Yes, many facilities do not discuss finances with potential residents. At Hermitage Richmond we do include a financial and actuarial review for many reasons. Most importantly we want to be sure residents can live on their terms and we want to be sure they do not have to move again if they are blessed with longevity of their level of living changes. Hermitage Richmond is part of Pinnacle Living and is a not-for-profit organization and that means something to us. We form a lifetime relationship with our residents and make a commitment to provide assistance to those who, through no fault of their own, become unable to fully meet the financial responsibilities of their residence or care.
As with any relationship this one is based on reciprocity by reviewing your financial and actuarial projections we can be sure that the plan to call our community home is the right one. The Samaritan Program provides peace of mind to residents who have been blessed by longevity but have outlived their financial resources. Pinnacle Living has never asked a resident to leave solely based upon their inability to pay for the services we provide. This has been an integral part of who we are since our founding in 1948.
Yes. Assisted Living communities in the Commonwealth of Virginia are licensed through the Department of Social Services. In addition to being licensed by the DSS, Hermitage Richmond is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Fewer than 15% of the communities in the nation are reviewed, approved and certified by CARF. We are proud to hold up this seal of approval for our residents and their families.
Different communities may define “Assisted Living” differently — make sure any community you consider matches your expectations. You should ask good questions about how the community could provide assistance required if needs change. Perhaps most importantly, you should be aware of what things are important to you in order to feel at home — driving a car? Preparing meals or snacks? Entertaining friends? Getting out into the community? What parts of the world are brought in for you to enjoy? Do they provide flexibility and conform to your schedule of do they have set hours to get up, eat meals or receive services?
Many people who are considering moving to an Assisted Living community find themselves at a time of change in life. Perhaps their ability to drive safely has changed. That often brings with it difficulties to connect with friends and families, go to grocery, bank, church or other key parts of life without relying on others. For those who stay in a single family home this single change can lead to isolation, poor eating habits, isolation, and other problems that significantly reduce their quality of life. Assisted Living at Hermitage Richmond is programmed and staffed to remove these dangers and replace them with maintenance free living, easy opportunities for privacy or social interactions. Most importantly these programs and activities connect residents with their loved ones and the greater community on their terms and as they direct. They enjoy a much richer social and mental life. Many residents find their physical health improves significantly when they move to Hermitage Richmond… usually because their emotional and mental health has improved by living in a better home!

Independent Living means many different things depending on the community. Some communities are basically apartments that are age restricted that do not offer any services or safety nets. Others may offer some services through partners. At Hermitage Richmond Independent Living is fully integrated into the overall community which offers the best of both worlds. Choose the right residence and the right location and enjoy maintenance free living without investing a large entrance fee. Enjoy private parking, full access to on and off site events, programs and activities as well as the convenience of services, including delicious meals, housekeeping, fresh linens, transportation and laundry services. And because Hermitage Richmond is a continuing care community, if a resident needs assisted living services they do not have to move! Only in the case of a need for a secure area to ensure those with memory issues are safe or in cases where 24 hour nursing supervision is required do our residents move within the community to McGuire Park, Snyder Park or the The Grove Health Care Center.
Most independent living communities are not licensed. We are proud to be licensed by the Department of Social Services and the Virginia Health Department, in addition to our accreditation by CARF. Different retirement communities may define “Independent Living” differently -- make sure any community you consider matches your understanding. You should also be aware of whether the community can provide assistance if you or your loved ones needs change. And perhaps most of all, you should carefully consider what things are important to you to feel happy, fulfilled and independent -- Driving a car? Preparing meals or snacks? Entertaining friends? Interacting with friends and neighbors? Getting out into the surrounding community? You want to be sure you are comparing “apples to apples” when you compare retirement communities. Are the monthly fees all-inclusive or a la-carte? Does the community offer meals… choices? Do they provide transportation? Housekeeping services?

Some people think health care means a hospital or a nursing home…others would say it means fitness or a gym. We are guided by our person centered philosophy and belief that people should maintain their health, physical, mental and spiritual no matter what level of living is best. To a degree we call our highest level of support health care because there is no place in any community where that focus, professionalism and attention to health is more important. Unlike many other ideas of what these words mean ours includes a key focus on that care being on the residents’ schedule, matching their desires and preferences and with an eye towards independence and contribution for those are two key elements of health for us all.
A Health Care community, like The Grove Health Care Center at Hermitage Richmond, offers complete health care services, including 24-hour access to nursing professionals, assistance with daily living, rehabilitation, and long-term care. Many other options do not offer this level of services to their residents.

Make sure the facility has appropriately-trained nursing staff, including RN’s and specialized caregivers, and that the staff is qualified to appropriately treat multiple-symptom illnesses, physical frailty, and other issues that impact quality of life and care for older persons. Ask questions about the staffing levels at all times of the day when you compare. Different retirement communities may define “Health Care” differently — make sure any community you consider matches your understanding. You should also be aware of how the community plans to provide the care you require as your needs change. And perhaps most of all, you should be aware of what things are important to you in order to enjoy your quality of life — your room’s decor? Social activities? Visiting friends? Getting out into the community? Accessible medical care? Many residents find themselves needing Health Care services temporarily (after surgery, for example) and then returning to their own apartment or home. Determine whether the communities you explore provide this flexibility. Many people find themselves at a time of life when their ability to drive and connect with friends and families is diminished. This frequently leads to depression, poor eating habits, isolation, and other problems that reduce their quality of life. The Grove Health Care Center at Hermitage Richmond is designed to combat this danger by providing programs and activities that help residents connect with the greater community and enjoy a richer social and mental life. Many residents find that not only does their physical health improve on entering Hermitage Richmond, but their emotional and mental health improves as well.
Most people prioritize quality of care, community atmosphere and amenities, and convenience of location.
When visiting a community look for things such as the residents’ overall appearance
Don’t be shy about talking to the residents about their overall satisfaction with their community. Talk with friends and community members to take advantage of their experience. The more folks you talk to, the better. Hermitage Richmond is licensed by the Department of Social Services and the Virginia Health Department. Visit their websites. Our warm, homey atmosphere is frequently cited as the first thing people notice about our community, along with our convenient neighborhood location.
